Oh look, my first nail art tutorial in a while since my Cherry Blossoms tutorial 😛 . I’ve been getting a lot of request for another tutorial from my readers and thought of something very simple and easy to do, without even needing any special tool (although if you have, even better). 🙂
This fun, happy / smiley nail art, will brighten up your nails for sure! Check it out.
To get started, you need a black and yellow nail polish (bold yellow looks great but pastel shades will work, too) and then a dotting tool (or a toothpick or anything with small rounded point).
Note: Don’t forget to use a base coat after you’ve prepped your nails. This is to avoid your nails from staining, extend the life of your manicure and an even surface for your nail polish to adhere too. I use Orly Top 2 Bottom (base coat + top coat in one), which I got from CVS for $7.99.
For the yellow base, I’m using Color Club in Almost Famous, which I got from Harmon’s for $2.99, not bad, huh?
Next: Draw the ‘stripes’.
I used Sally Hansen Nail Art Striper in Black (310) since it has a fine brush, which is perfect for this job. Otherwise, you can use a nail art brush with your normal black nail polish.
Here’s a tip:
I have super shaky hands and can’t draw a straight line, luckily for this nail art straight lines aren’t necessary since that would take the fun out of this design, in my opinion. And when drawing these stripes, I try to focus and hold my breath for a second then paint, it helps a lot!
Next: Draw the ‘smiley mouth’
When doing the smiley’s mouth, go from corner to center and then do the other half with the same method. It’s less messy and it will give you a chance to also perfect the curve if needed by going once over.
You can alternate the designs to your preference. I tend to always have something on my accent nail and that’s what I’m going for here.
Next: Draw the heart-shaped eyes.
Instead of rounded eyes like my mug, I decided to tweak it a little and did heart-shaped eyes since it’s cuter. I used the smallest dotting tool I have and I’m sure you can substitute it with a toothpick if you don’t have one.
And of course, because it’s way so much fun to be a fruit loop in the bowl of Cheerios, I had to add this cheeky tongue to this design. Now apply your top coat, and say hello to your happy/smiley nails!
