Ending 2014 without featuring Demeter Fragrance Library would be so wrong. How could I just keep this wonderful brand with simple, subtle, singular scents to myself?
We’re talking about scents we encounter on a day to day basis, pretty much everywhere. Scents that remind us of the good ol’ days, that beautiful summer getaway, a romantic evening or memories that give us the good vibes.
Perfumes are, without a doubt, great but can we all agree not all smell great? Perfumes complex nature, which is dependent on its designer (with all the top, middle and bottom notes to take into account,) can sometimes become mind-boggling and headache-inducing. And let’s not forget the hefty price tag they normally come along.
This probably explains why for years I walked away from designer brands or perfumes in general, until Demeter swayed me back into their library of fragrance that I can only call pure awesome.
The Demeter Fragrance Library consists of more than 250 different fragrances inspired by everyday objects and experiences. These are simple, friendly and familiar scents, scents inspired by the beautiful smells that surround us everyday, adjusted to be both recognizable and wearable. The assortment includes wonderful smells like Vanilla Cake Batter, Baby Powder and Honeysuckle, and many more unusual fragrances, like Dirt, Leather and Gin & Tonic. We are the physical and literal manifestation of “stopping to smell the roses,” convincing people to enjoy and appreciate the beautiful smells that surround us all the time.
“A person’s fragrance “wardrobe” should include more than just designer or classic perfumes. Having a fragrance wardrobe of just designer perfumes is like having a wardrobe of nothing but evening clothes – beautiful but not what you might want for everyday life. You need the comfortable clothes as well.”
– Christopher Brosius, Founder – Demeter Fragrance Library
I was asked to pick a few (thinking I would be sent one or two samples, not knowing I would be sent all in full sizes!) that piqued my curiosity so I went with the following:
Sunshine, Daisy, Apple Blossom, Fig Leaf, Laundromat, Clean Skin, Gin & Tonic, Fireplace and Patchouli.
Let me tell you something, Demeter’s singular scents are so spot on, I’m in awe! There’s no guessing with their fragrances and you have names you can easily pronounce and may I add, you won’t have a hole in your pocket, even if you own one or two bottles. The whole concept of this brand is all about simplifying and highlighting the beautiful, familiar smells all around us and maximizing the bond between scent and sense of memory.
Info: A 30ml Pick Me Up Cologne Spray retails for $20.00 . There’s also an option to buy a vial sampler for $2.50, 1/2 oz cologne mini sprayer $6.00 or a purse spray for $10.00
Let’s take Fireplace for example. When I chose this scent, I was expecting something warm and cozy and perfect for the winter. And I was absolutely right but there’s more… it reminds me of the times I spent with my Mom and Dad at our favorite pub/restaurant in the UK, where we would normally meet for either a full English breakfast or brunch.
My favorite spot in this restaurant was sitting near the fireplace while enjoying our afternoon tea, just letting time passed us by. I find it so incredible how this scent triggered these wonderful memories. Don’t you?
I’m also a big fan of their sophisticated and clean packaging approach. Simplicity is beautiful and Demeter has shown us that here.
I’m no fragrance connoisseur but if I put the following fragrances I currently have in categories, it would go like this:
- For that refreshing and clean feel, try Gin & Tonic, Laundromat or Clean Skin (exactly in this order, Gin & Tonic being my first pick)
- Sunshine, Daisy and Fig Leaf will give you that ‘I’m on holiday’ kind of feeling or ‘It’s summer all year round’. Seriously.
- Having winter blues? Hook up with Fireplace, Patchouli or Apple Blossom, you’re in good company with their warm, cozy and ‘feeling at home’ vibe.
Need more reason to love this brand? Demeter Fragrances contains 95% natural ingredients, which are derived from natural or renewable resources. There are no artificial coloring, no binders or emulsifiers, no phthalates and alcohol is naturally fermented from corn.
Overall, this definitely was a unique discovery experience in the world of scents that I absolutely enjoyed and would urge anyone to try a scent or two from Demeter’s vast choices. I also believe that fragrances should be this simple, relatable and something that speaks to you. Of course, being affordable is a big bonus.
