Dermatologist, Dr Whitney Bowe: Tips On Getting Beach-Ready Skin
We often fall into bad habits in the winter, whether it’s missing the gym for the umpteenth time in a row or eating poorly. Unfortunately, when we put our bodies under stress we can worsen certain chronic conditions we may have, like acne.[1],[2]Luckily, celebrity dermatologist and acne expert Dr. Whitney Bowe gives her top tips to help in getting beach-ready skin.
· DIET: Although there is no proven link between diet and acne, low glycemic diets have been associated with low levels of acne.[3],[4] “Some of my favorite low-glycemic foods are non-starchy vegetables, steel-cut oatmeal and fruit,” says Dr. Bowe.[5]
· SLEEP: One study showed that the risk of experiencing higher levels of stress increases by 14 percent for every hour of sleep you lose.2,[6] “Knowing that stress can trigger acne, there is no excuse not to get the recommended seven to nine hours of sleep a night,” says Dr. Bowe.2,[7],[8]
· EXCERCISE: “Exercise is one of my favorite ways to reduce stress and increase blood flow, which benefits the skin.”[9]Dr. Bowe suggests sending free radicals packing with at least 10 minutes of running a day on the treadmill.9,[10]
Don’t forget to bring your sunscreen to the beach. “It is important to apply a broad spectrum sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher every day and reapply every two hours to protect skin from sun damage. [11]
If you do find yourself with breakouts, one prescription Dr. Bowe recommends to treat acne in people 12 years or older is ACZONE® (dapsone) Gel 5%, the #1 prescribed retinoid-free branded acne product.[12],[13]
