I started out blogging using my iPhone for all my pictures, not with a camera. There are many smartphones out there that, in the right hands, are capable of taking amazing pictures! And while the compliments I received from my readers and brands were flattering, I felt something was missing with my work.
I would look at pictures in magazines and wonder why I could not capture this look, where the subject seemed to “pop” from the background. This was when my geek of husband introduced me to the concept of depth of field and digital cameras.
In simple terms, depth of field is what separates a subject from the foreground or background, by keeping it in focus. Take a look at the picture below and notice how the Converse logo appears sharp and the background is blurry…

This was captured using my Sony A6000 mirrorless camera. While a smartphone is capable of producing depth of field to a degree, it is limited when compared to a full digital camera or DSLR.
These cameras have larger sensors, which when combined with a larger lens, can capture more light, thus producing a deeper depth of field effect.
So why did I bother to buy a digital camera when I was doing fine with my smartphone?
I wanted my subjects to pop more. I wanted beauty products in focus with the background blurred out. I also wanted to be able to take pictures from a distance by being able to zoom in with a lens instead of having to walk closer to my subject, potentially blocking the light with my shadow.
There is one more reason why buying a digital camera just made sense for me.
I never knew that I was passionate about photography, but in the past few years, I realized that I love capturing beautiful images of all types. I can imagine one day becoming a full-time photographer, shooting both products and models. Can you imagine the look of my client if I arrived at a professional photo shoot holding an iPhone as my primary camera?
Even if I was capable of producing the results they were looking for, I doubt I would even get the chance to do so. If you are going to become a professional in any field, you should conduct yourself professionally in every manner, including the equipment you use. Of course, it does not mean you should go out and buy the most expensive tool out there. I’m only saying to get the piece of gear that allows you to unleash your full creativity. I did not want my smartphone to limit the type pictures I could produce.
