Winter is a very curious season. Animals in the wild go to sleep, birds stop singing in the morning, and your skin can feel like sandpaper due to dryness. In other words, winter can be a bit… gloomy. I wanted to bring some joy to break the ice, and I love giving gifts to people. It’s the ultimate win-win, as I love putting a smile on someone’s face.
I thought it would be great to surprise someone with a gift basket or box. Can you imagine the look on a loved one or friend’s face at the sight of receiving something unique way after Christmas? Inspired by one of my favorite books, ‘The Year of Cozy’ by Adrianna Adarme; you don’t need a special occasion to surprise someone with a gift. You simply can do it “just coz.” It’s easier than you can imagine creating something fun, purposeful and, yes, affordable.
Remember, at the end of the day, it’s the thought that counts.
Here’s how you can get started:
1. How many items?
You don’t need to have a lot of gifts to fill your box or basket. Three to six pieces is a good number, as having only two gifts in a basket can look a bit lonely, and anything more than that may sound like you are trying to make up for something (a forgotten birthday perhaps?). Consider the sizes of the items as well. The more variety in dimensions for each, the happier it will all appear.
2. Which items are relevant?
I chose to go with gifts that cater to protect one’s skin during the winter months.
Your case may be different. Perhaps your cousin is about to start traveling the world, or a friend is going to Hawaii to study marine life? Making the items relevant to the moment will emphasize even more that you are truly thinking about them.
3. Something that you love.
I currently love Cetaphil® Moisturizing Cream, which I’ve picked up from Target near us. Its non-greasy formula is quick drying and has been great at hydrating my extremely dry skin. In fact, my husband calls me the ‘moisturizer queen’ as I never skip this particular routine in my beauty regimen. As an eczema sufferer, it’s a must in my books to find the right product that intensely moisturizes and is also gentle on my sensitive skin, like Cetaphil®.
(Talking about skin care and moisturizer with my little guy at Target.)
A tip on how to use this particular gift on a handwritten note will earn you major brownie points if it’s something that the recipient has never tried before.
4. Add that personal touch.
The care and time that you take in creating your gift basket will be visible in the finished product. Try using a ribbon in the person’s favorite color or handwritten notes, or in my case, flowers I’ve dried from home plus the lovely scent of eucalyptus.
5. Now make someone happy (and their skin!)
